Watch on an SDI reference monitor

A client or a second suite can watch a Gradetonic room on a real reference monitor instead of a browser. OBS Studio plays the room’s stream and sends it out over SDI through a Blackmagic DeckLink or UltraStudio.

Signal path: Gradetonic room › OBS Studio › DeckLink SDI output › reference monitor

What you need

  • A computer with OBS Studio (the latest stable version).
  • A Blackmagic device with SDI output, such as a DeckLink Mini Monitor, DeckLink Studio or UltraStudio Monitor, with Blackmagic Desktop Video installed. Input-only devices don’t work.
  • An SDI cable to the monitor, and the room’s link and password.

1. Copy the stream address

  1. Open the room in your browser on the same network as the OBS computer and enter the password.
  2. Click Refresh token & copy RTMP URL. A new personal stream address is copied to your clipboard.

The address is valid for 20 minutes and works only from the internet connection where you copied it. Start playback in OBS within those 20 minutes; once it plays, it keeps playing. Copy a new address whenever you restart playback later.

2. Play the stream in OBS

  1. In OBS, click + under Sources and choose Media Source (or VLC Video Source if you use the VLC plugin).
  2. Turn off Local File and paste the copied address into Input.
  3. Click OK and check that the picture appears in the OBS preview.

3. Send it to the monitor over SDI

  1. Connect the DeckLink’s SDI output to the monitor and select that SDI input on the monitor.
  2. In OBS, open Tools › DeckLink Output and choose your DeckLink device.
  3. Choose the output format that matches the project and the monitor, for example 1080p25 or 1080p50.
  4. Click Start. The monitor now shows the OBS program output.

Settings to match

Setting What to check
OBS canvas and output resolution The same as the monitoring format, e.g. 1920 × 1080
OBS frame rate The same as the stream and the SDI format
DeckLink output format Supported by the monitor
Monitor input Set to the right SDI input
Audio On or off, depending on what you need in the room

The rule that matters most: OBS settings, the DeckLink output format and the monitor’s input format all match.

  • Install or update Blackmagic Desktop Video and restart the computer.
  • Open Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup: the device must appear there, otherwise OBS can’t see it either.
  • On macOS, allow the Blackmagic software under System Settings › Privacy & Security and restart.
  • Use the latest stable OBS, and check that your device has an SDI output.
  • Still missing? Reinstall Desktop Video, then OBS.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely solution
No picture on the monitor Check the SDI cable, the monitor input, the DeckLink output format and OBS resolution and frame rate
Picture in OBS but not on SDI Check that DeckLink Output is started with the right device
The stream doesn’t start in OBS The address expired or you’re on another network: copy a new one from the room
Unstable or unsupported picture Use a standard format the monitor supports, such as 1080p25 or 1080p50
No sound Check OBS audio routing and whether the output format carries audio

OBS counts as one viewer in the room, like a browser.
