Terms explained

Term What it means
Latency The delay between your suite and the viewer’s screen. With Gradetonic, less than two seconds.
Encoder Hardware or software that compresses your video output into a stream.
Bitrate How much data the stream uses per second. Gradetonic streams use 8 Mbit/s.
CBR Constant bitrate: the stream uses the same amount of data every second, which keeps delivery steady.
Keyframe interval How often a complete picture is sent. One second lets viewers start quickly.
H.264 The video codec used for the stream, supported by every browser and device.
1080p Full HD, 1920 × 1080 pixels, progressive.
8-bit 4:2:0 Color depth and color resolution of the stream: standard for streaming, fine for review, not for final mastering.
Rec. 709 The color standard for HD video. Send Rec. 709 so viewers’ displays show the picture as intended.
RTMP and RTMPS The way your encoder sends the stream to us. RTMPS is the encrypted version and our default.
SRT An alternative streaming method for difficult networks, available on request.
SDI and HDMI The video outputs and inputs on your grading hardware and encoders.
NDI A way to send video over your local network, for example from editing software to OBS.
Surround The color around the picture in the player: black, dark grey, mid grey or white.
Room One stream with its own address, password and viewer list, for up to 10 viewers.
Pass One-off access for one room: an hour of viewing minutes, a day or three days.
Counted minute A minute in which your stream is live and at least one viewer watches. Only these count towards an hour pass.
Fair use Up to 100 streaming hours per room per month in a subscription.
